When was the last time you decided to register your brand name, company’s name or your trade dress as trademark.Probably at the time when you decided to establish your identity on the goods and services offered by you in your domestic and foreign markets. The idea for registration might have vanished due to rush of work or other commitments but certainly, it again seized you when you found that your goods and services are being marketed by others under your trademark and large chunk of market share has gone to the ones using your trademark. Imagine the scenario you having spent millions in advertising your products or services and the market you have captured by dint of hard work slipping away. This is a typical case with entrepreneurs small or big. Usually the need for registering a trademark/service mark only attract the attention of Chief Executive or Head of Corporate Sales when the losses start mounting. This however is not the case with each and every company. The ones aware of the importance of trademarks protection do so long before the product is actually launched or the services actually offered.

Trademark is a very important asset. It is more precious than the real property.Cognizant of this, multinationals in Pakistan have allocated a definite budget for their trademarks protection. This include budgets for prosecuting an application and for administrative, media and court actions for infringement of trademarks.Intellectual Property Attorneys are being regularly consulted on various issues of protection. National companies likewise taking cue from their domestic and foreign competitors are lining up their marks for registration. There are a total of 45 classes to choose from. 34 classes include the goods while the remaining, 35-45, include the services. The number of registration of trademarks has increased manifold. Many get their marks registered in 45 classes to ensure that their trademark may not be used by other by way of registration in any of the class amongst the 45 classes.
Intellectual Property Organisation of Pakistan is quickly computerizing its records and this has reduced the time for search from 45 days to a week or a maximum of ten days. The applications for registration of trademarks are being responded to in quick manner. This change is quite visible in the Lahore Office of IPO Pakistan, where the Director IPO Mr. Rizwan Basharat has contributed much to change the rusty culture of Trademark Registry.

Have you ever thought of playing with the words.Indeed when you were young your nursery teacher sang words for you.How did you feel listening to your teacher.Yes you wanted to sing with your teacher loudly and clearly so that everybody could hear you.Well you started learning the importance of words at a very early age. And remember the word game you played with your mates in the classroom.Everybody wanted to win.Funny is’nt. And what happened when somebody spelled a word and it did’nt make sense with any!All of you except few booed at him.The poor chap could hardly hide his embarrassed face.Pity is’nt it, even the teacher frowned at him sometimes calling him a goofy.Shamefacedly he would take his chair, his ears turning red and a guilt running deep into his bones as if he had committed a grave sin. Then came your college days a different world the goofies disappearing into oblivion and you forgetting them as they never existed. Nobody ever bothered to remember the poor folks.

When you became a charlatan the goofies started emering into prominence. Some emerging as  performers on a stage, some became ideamen, some started making their name in copyrighting and last not the least some turned out to be inventors. How did it happen.Their rise to prominence was phenominal. The charlatans could never discover how did the goofies became creators and artists.Slowly but grudginly charlatans acknowledged that their word game is over and the goofies have become masters of the trade.Their undeciphered words which could make them a laughing stock for others have finally been deciphered and such is the popularity gained by these words that every media manager want the goofy inventor in his team.
